Fluid retention, or water retention, is defined as the excessive accumulation of fluids in the circulatory system, tissues, or body cavities.

The main symptoms of fluid retention are:

  • Increased waist circumference
  • Swelling, especially in the lower limbs and ankles
  • Significant weight gain without changes in diet
  • Reduced skin elasticity
  • Pain or stiffness in the joints

Treatment:

  1. Reduce salt (sodium): Excessive salt consumption exacerbates fluid retention, making this the first step in treatment. Adults should consume no more than 6g of salt per day, equivalent to approximately one teaspoon. It is recommended to avoid foods high in salt, such as salty snacks, canned foods, ready-made sauces, and baked goods. Checking food labels is a good practice.
  2. Increase potassium intake: Potassium helps to eliminate excess fluids by reducing sodium levels and increasing urine production. Foods rich in potassium include raisins, potatoes, bananas, avocados, and dried apricots.
  3. Avoid processed carbohydrates: Consuming processed carbohydrates triggers a chain reaction. Processed carbs cause a sharp increase in blood sugar levels, which in turn leads to a rise in insulin levels. High insulin levels increase sodium reabsorption in the kidneys, leading to fluid retention. Therefore, it is best to avoid white luxury bread, sugary cereals, baked goods, pastries, and sweets.
  4. Say “Yes” to Vitamin B6: Especially women experiencing significant fluid retention before and during menstruation are advised to take a Vitamin B6 supplement, as it appears to contribute positively to reducing retention. Before using any supplements, it’s important to consult with your doctor and dietitian.
  5. Use natural diuretics: Dandelion, or Taraxacum, is an herb with confirmed diuretic properties and has been used as a diuretic for many years. Before using any supplements or herbs, consult with your doctor and dietitian.
  6. Increase water intake: Proper hydration is vital for fluid balance and the management of fluid retention.
  7. Incorporate physical activity into your routine: Physical activity leads to fluid loss through sweating, thereby reducing fluid retention. Choose any form of physical activity that you enjoy to stay consistent.
