Java citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus) is a tall, aromatic grass associated with the tropical regions of Asia, particularly the island of Java. Its long, slender leaves and aromatic aerial parts are distinguished by their powerful and characteristic fragrance, giving the plant a special place in Southeast Asia’s aromatic tradition.
Citronella has a long history in traditional aromatic practices. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, its essential oil was used in aromatic preparations intended to keep mosquitoes and other nuisance insects away.
Over time, its characteristic lemony fragrance became associated with scented candles, soaps and outdoor formulations, earning it a distinctive place in the history of botanical aromatic ingredients.
This particular essential oil originates from Indonesia and is produced by steam distillation of the aerial parts of Java citronella. It imparts to cosmetic formulations a vibrant, lemony and intensely green aroma, with fresh, botanical and subtly sweet notes. Its dynamic aromatic identity gives finished formulations a clean, tropical and refreshing character.
Citronella essential oil in cosmetic formulations
Java citronella essential oil is a 100% natural and highly concentrated botanical ingredient.
It is used in an appropriate and controlled concentration as an ingredient in the professional manufacture of soaps, cleansing products, shower gels, bath salts, balms, body butters, deodorant formulations, foot-care products, as well as body and massage oils. It gives finished formulations an intense citrus and botanical aromatic profile, accompanied by a pleasant sensation of cleanliness and freshness.
Combinations in professional cosmetic formulations
In body and massage oils, it can be incorporated at an appropriate concentration into almond oil, which acts as a gentle and versatile base, allowing citronella’s fresh, lemony aroma to unfold.
In lightweight body-care formulations, it can be combined with jojoba oil, while in soaps, solid balms and foot-care products it pairs beautifully with coconut oil. When combined with calendula-infused oil, it creates a richer base with a bright, green and tropical aromatic character.
Use: This essential oil is intended exclusively for professional use as an aromatic raw material in the manufacture of cosmetic formulations. It is not a finished cosmetic product. Do not apply undiluted to the skin and do not ingest. The incorporation rate must be determined by the final formulator in accordance with the lowest applicable limit, the technical specifications of the raw material and the safety assessment of the finished product.
